Job Description

**$10,000 Sign On Bonus**

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, prepares and stains specimens from any body site and
microscopically examines their cellular structures to detect cancer and other
abnormalities. Responsible for issuing diagnostic reports on normal (negative)
gynecological specimens. Assists clinician at the aspiration biopsy site by preparing
smears, proper collection and processing of the specimen.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. As per departmental guidelines, processes the specimens and stains the smears.
Microscopically examines prepared, stained smears to detect structural abnormalities.
Classifies smears based on cellular knowledge as normal (negative), abnormal and
diagnostic of cancer. Correlate surgical reports from HFH anatomic pathology with
cytologic findings. Total number of slides screened not to exceed the limit set by CLIA
88.

2. Rotate on technical processing, cubicle position, and NGYN screening according to
schedule set by leader/supervisor.

3. For gynecological specimens (Pap smears), determine which cases should be further
evaluated by the cytopathologist, formulate and issue diagnostic reports on normal
(negative) cases, and perform follow-up triage on all cases routed to the pathologist
before finalization of reports.

4. Assist with instructional training of MLT, cytotechnology students, residents, fellows,
and the orientation of new staff.

5. Maintains competency in the use of information systems used for daily work.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • A Bachelors Degree with successful completion in CAAHEP accredited program in
    cytotechnology or fulfill CLIA88 requirements for cytotechnologist as stated in Federal
    Register 493.1483, if prior to 1992.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time at a microscope.
    Vision
  • Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
    Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.
    Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.
  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform job
    functions.

LICENSURES AND CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • ASCP eligibility or certification in cytotechnology.
